Uber Faces GDPR Fine Amidst Regulatory Challenges and RoboTaxi Expansion
New development (August 23, 2023): Uber faces a significant GDPR fine of €824.9 million ($966 million) from the Dutch Data Protection Authority for allegedly deactivating driver accounts without human intervention between 2018 and 2022. Despite this, Uber and its partners Tesla, Waymo, and others have secured permits from Nevada regulators for robotaxi operations in Las Vegas, including a potential deployment of up to 8,000 vehicles over the next year. Uber is also exploring a hybrid ride-hailing model combining human and robotaxis, aiming to position itself as a more flexible alternative amid regulatory challenges. The company contends that driver suspensions are often temporary and appeals are possible, while Waymo is ramping up lobbying efforts to secure autonomous taxi regulations favorable to its vision.
