Nixon led Vindman 55.2% to 44.8% with more than 80% of ballots counted when the Associated Press called the race in her favor.

Nixon, who ran to the left of the TDS-addled Vindman, defeated the fired National Security Council (NSC) aide by a 56-44 percent margin.

Nixon now goes on to face incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody for the remainder of the term won by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in 2022.

Nixon will take on incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) in November. The winner of that race will serve the remainder of the six-year term that Marco Rubio was elected to in 2022.

Recent polling suggests Moody, the former Florida attorney general who was appointed to her Senate seat after Marco Rubio was tapped as Trump’s secretary of state, maintains a strong lead over Nixon.

Democrats have their sights set on upsetting Republican Ashley Moody in the US Senate general election. Moody, picked by DeSantis to replace Marco Rubio when he became secretary of state last year, won what was almost a token primary election to run in November to serve the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.

Nixon, who has served in the Florida state legislature since 2020, will face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in November’s general election.

Moody is running for a full six-year Senate term after she was appointed last year to the seat by Gov. Ron DeSantis to replace Marco Rubio after he was nominated by President Donald Trump to be secretary of state. She easily fended off several challengers to win her Republican primary on Tuesday, NBC News projects.

Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat first elected to the Florida House in 2020, entered politics after years of community and labor organizing. Her campaign describes her as a union organizer, and SEIU says Nixon served as state field director for SEIU Florida and as director of the Florida Public Service Union’s Higher Education Campaign. The union also identifies Nixon as an SEIU member, while her official Florida House biography lists her occupation as "Higher Education Director."

From 2009 to 2011, Nixon served as a district aide to Florida State Rep. Mia Jones. Nixon's platform focuses on universal health care, the wealthy paying higher taxes, and increasing the federal minimum wage to $25 an hour, according to her campaign website. She reiterated those goals to supporters during her Aug. 18 victory speech.

Nixon regularly criticized Vindman for only recently moving to Florida, and said her campaign was an attempt to prove that insurgent progressive politics has a place in Florida politics.

Her campaign told USA TODAY that besides her membership in the DSA, Nixon is also a member of the Working Families Party, Service Employees International Union and Democratic Party.

In recent months, Nixon announced she joined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), aiming to defeat Vindman with the backing of the organization following success in New York, Colorado, and Michigan.
