Carse, 31, was seen in handcuffs in footage which circulated online after he was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly following an incident at around 4am on Sunday.

Carse, who was seen in the video talking to Durham team-mate Matthew Potts, with Stokes also pictured in the background, has subsequently been withdrawn from the squad for the second Test at Lord's, which begins on Thursday, with an investigation by the Cricket Regulator under way.

The England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Monday that Carse would not be available to face Pakistan this week, after he was released from the squad from last week’s first Test victory at Headingley, which led to him playing for Durham against Derbyshire.

Carse travelled to London with Stokes, who was doing commercial work, on Sunday, but has now left and will play for Durham on Thursday. Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, had called for a punishment that “sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team”. Telegraph, London

Published Fast bowler Josh Tongue said captain Joe Root's message to the England players about their off-field behaviour has "100%" been heeded.

After admitting he was "hacked off" at the latest controversy, Root attempted to put a positive spin on the situation by pointing to the opportunity he and incoming Test head coach Stephen Fleming have to alter the public's perception of their side.

Plenty will hinge on the surface at Lord’s and in that respect Root and Babar are not the only men feeling the pinch. Karl McDermott, the MCC’s head groundsman, saw his pitch for the quick‑fire New Zealand Test in June labelled “unsatisfactory” by the match referee and handed a demerit point.

“It was a chat that was needed, a very good chat from Rooty” the 28-year-old said. “He was very clear on the message of what it’s like to be an England cricketer. We’re very privileged to put on that England shirt and we want to show kids growing up how good it is to play for England in front of thousands of people. He was honest with us all in the changing room. He said it straight. What has happened in the past is the past, and we need to try to move on from that.”

This week, Root made no attempt to hide his frustration at "stupid mistakes". On what Root said to the players, Tongue revealed: "He was honest with us all in the changing room. He said it straight. As soon as that chat was finished, our focus was fully on these next five days."

“We’ve just got to make sure we’re as professional as we can be,” he said. “Obviously things have happened, we need to try and move on and show all the youngsters growing up wanting to play for England that it’s an amazing place to be. I’ve just tried to move on from that [Wellington] situation and focus on the cricket. It’s an absolute privilege to play for England and especially walking out and thousands of people watching you. I want to put in as many performances as I can for England, and win as many games for England as well.”
