The new district centered on Broward County is the result of mid-decade redistricting initiated by Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, in January 2026 as part of a national effort by Republicans to reduce the number of congressional seats held by Democrats ahead of the midterm elections. The state legislature, firmly under the control of Republicans, passed new election maps in April, eliminating four seats with majorities of Democratic voters.

Despite the controversy, Wasserman Schultz was able to prevail over a divided field of four challengers, all of whom are Black. They included organizer Ethan Manley, former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, 2 Live Crew rapper Luther “Luke” Campbell and real estate broker Dale Holness.

But ultimately, Wasserman Schultz bested the crowded field and avoided adding her name to the list of incumbents who’ve lost their re-elections this year. Her Democratic colleague, Rep. Jared Moskowitz, also won his primary in the battleground 25th District, brushing aside a challenge from the left by Oliver Larkin, a former union organizer and democratic socialist.

But Republican Rep. Cory Mills fell short. Former television journalist Ryan Elijah defeated the incumbent in the state’s 7th District, as Mills came into the race wounded by a slew of controversies, including a House Ethics Committee probe into sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations and a Justice Department investigation, NBC News previously reported. Mills has denied wrongdoing.
