LONDON -- The death toll continues to climb two days after massive flash flooding obliterated parts of the Nepal-Tibet border region on Wednesday, with at least 469 bodies recovered and nearly 1,000 people still missing, authorities said.

Several hundred people have died in Nepal and with hundreds more still missing after the flash flood. On the Tibet side of the border alone, more than 550 are missing - nearly half of which are foreigners.

Nepal and neighboring Tibet experienced a horrific landslide and flood wave that began on Wednesday after what scientists believe was a “glacial collapse” at high altitude as a result of heavy rains. Videos from the affected regions showed large mudslides appearing to bury buildings, bridges, and in some cases entire communities as locals attempted to flee. Authorities stated on Thursday that they believe there are entire towns currently isolated from the rest of the world as the avalanches destroyed roads connecting them to the rest of their respective countries.
