OpenAI Reorganizes Infrastructure Amid Executive Turnover and IPO Delays
-
In a statement to TechCrunch about Malone’s departure, OpenAI said it had “recently reorganized” its “infrastructure organization to support the scale and pace of our work.” It added: “We have a strong, deeply experienced data center team in place, with clear leadership and the technical expertise to execute our plans.”

GizmodoThe news of this apparent resignation comes from an anonymously-sourced Wall Street Journal article. Apparently this head of data centers, Chris Malone, left last week after having been hired in March of last year. He was meant to oversee OpenAI’s part in the development of the Stargate project, a huge joint venture with Oracle and Softbank. Progress on Stargate has been shaky and uncertain, and while the Journal says OpenAI has a new plan for building out data center capacity, it says, “other leaders are heading that effort.”

Since the turn of the year, more than a dozen executives have departed, including CEO Sam Altman’s top deputy, the chief operating officer, a chief revenue officer, its chief marketing officer, as well as several different team leads. Yesterday, news broke that Chris Malone, the company’s head of data centers, left the company last week after joining in March 2024.

But the churn has naturally raised questions, especially as it preps for an IPO. OpenAI’s public listing, originally expected this year, is now reportedly pushed to 2027, and the company is undergoing a kind of reputational vetting that comes with any looming listing. Concerns have arisen that the company may be overvalued and that its profitability doesn’t match the gargantuan investments being made in the lab.

01 Gizmodo For reference, here is the lede of a relevant Politico story from Monday: “The intensifying late-summer backlash against data centers is inspiring panic among some corners of the tech sector — amid fears that the industry is mishandling a political crisis that will stretch into 2028 and beyond.”

02 TechCrunch With so much high-level turnover, OpenAI will need someone to fill the vacuum. The company will also need to trim its sails ahead of the IPO, boosting revenue and cutting costs wherever possible. For both problems, Brockman’s influence may be rising at the perfect time.
